Quite often we see a video like the one below. And it makes me so angry for a couple of reasons. First of all, it makes me mad that these things happen because of us, mankind. But what also really gets to me is that I see a video like this blow up on social media. Millions of views, thousands of likes shares, and comments. Yet, when I am on the beach there’s hardly anyone who takes the effort to pick up even one item of rubbish that is not their own. Yes, there are those of us who do their One Piece a Day. And many of us are already aware of their environmental footprint. We need to take action though. I know it’s just the way it is and on a global level we, as individuals, can’t really change things. But to be honest I just don’t agree.
We could do so much more than just like, share and comment on these videos and it’s almost just as easy. You don’t have to be part of an organized full day beach clean up. Of course these are great and should always continue. Still it’s so much easier to do a 2 Minute Beach Clean each time you’re at the beach. Don’t just like and share this. Do your One Piece a Day or a 2 minute beach clean or whatever you want to do as long as you do something. Small efforts combined really can make a big difference. What if al those tens of thousands of likes and shares start picking up trash…
One Piece a Day
One Piece a Day is a very easy initiative and contains of just three moral rules.
- I join for life
- I only throw away rubbish in a bin
- Every day I pick up at least one piece of rubbish that’s not my own
2 Minute Beach Clean
Next time you go to the beach, whether it’s to surf or walk the dog, it’s easy to make time for a 2 minute beach clean. You pick up a few bits of marine litter and take it home to recycle or put it in a bin at the beach. It’s as simple as that. There’s no need for bureaucracy, insurance, risk assessments or any kind of paperwork
