Recently I visited my third Ocean Film Tour in the Netherlands. Again an incredible display of short documentaries for ocean lovers. Nevertheless, one really shocked me and got me thinking. Sonic Sea is a documentary about sound pollution in the ocean. Most of us go to the ocean to get away from it all, everyday life, the noise of business, and the stress of work. But what if you can’t? What if you live in the ocean and the sounds you hear literally makes your ears bleed and drive you so insane that you beach yourself to get away from it?
Sound Pollution
Most of the sound pollution is created by shipping noise, seismic testing (for offshore drilling), and navy sonar. However, for all three polluters there are very efficient alternatives. You can read more about it in this report.
Shipping lanes and seismic exploration (bombs)
Oceans are a sonic symphony. Sound is essential to the survival and prosperity of marine life. But man-made ocean sound pollution is threatening this fragile world.
Awareness is just one part of the solution but you can also take action or request to host a screening of the film.
