I have been in love with Skeleton Bay barrels for a while now but recently I have been a bit annoyed with a new video that emerged of Bianca Buitendag surfing this beautiful spot in Namibia. The clip itself has great cinematography, good music, and the surf is pretty damn good to be honest. The thing that annoys me though, is the fact that everybody (media) needs to mention the fact that Bianca is a woman. Is this the first woman ever to surf Skeleton Bay barrels? Why do we feel the need to emphasize this? Is it really so special that she was the first woman that surfed it, or the fact that she is a woman at all? Come on people! It’s 2016, we already know that female surfers rip. Or perhaps it’s just a way to attract people’s attention in today’s constant stream of content on social media. Well in that case, I like it even less. How are we ever going to be equal when we use gender to generate traffic? Of course there are times where you point out something special or something different because it’s noteworthy. But in this case it’s just another surfer who got barrelled at one of the most amazing places on the planet!
